Tennis players are all proud to represent their country on the international stage. This honour is particularly important during Fed Cup ties, when they are named to a team in order to represent their nation. On Canada Day, we thought it would be fitting to show you what this means for our players.

For Carol Zhao, Canada is more than a country, it is also synonymous with homeland. Born in Chongqing, China, she moved to Canada at the age of seven and was subsequently granted Canadian citizenship. The Ontario resident is proud to represent Canada at the international level and has said that it is always a unique opportunity and a great honour.

Born in Mississauga, Ontario, Bianca Vanessa Andreescu moved to Romania at an early age. A few years later, her parents returned to Canada to give their daughter a better life, a decision that they certainly do not regret since she herself has admitted that she could not have hoped for a better life than the ones she lives currently. Moreover, it can be said that Bianca is extremely honoured to be Canadian, seeing as in 2017, she was the recipient of the Fed Cup Heart Award, given to a player who represents her country with distinction and courage on the court and demonstrates commitment towards her team.

As for Françoise Abanda, born in Montreal to parents of Cameroonian descent, it goes without saying that representing Canada takes on a very special importance, because each time she goes on the court wearing the Canadian colours, she plays with determination, passion and heart. On the sidelines during Canada’s most recent tie against Ukraine, she stated that she “loves to play at home” and “loves Canada”.

For Gabriela Dabrowski, representing Canada on the international stage is an incredible opportunity. In fact, the highest ranked doubles player in the country and two-time mixed doubles Grand Slam champion explained that she “feels grateful to live in such a welcoming, multicultural and peaceful country”. She said that she is appreciative of the chance that Canada provides her to reach her goals and dreams.

Finally, for Eugenie Bouchard, Canada holds an important place in her career and she demonstrated this during the most recent Fed Cup tie. She played the role of hero in her country’s 3-2 victory and did not hesitate to share on social media that representing Canada makes her feel all kinds of warm emotions and that she loves this country very much. She is also nominated for the Fed Cup Heart Award following her most recent performance and needs your help to win this award. Fans have until July 5 to give her a boost by voting here.

On behalf of the entire Tennis Canada family and the players representing our country around the world, Happy Canada Day!
