Day six at the French Open is wrapped up and all of the second round matches are finished along with a few third round matches. On the men's side, Roger Federer advanced through his second and third round contests with ease, defeating both opponents in straight sets. World No. 2 Rafael Nadal also got through his second round match without difficulty. Andy Murray, on the other hand, has struggled a bit in these early round match-ups as he had had to battle through three four-set matches, his last one against No. 25 Marcos Baghdatis whom he beat 6-2, 6-3, 0-6, 6-2. Novak Djokovic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga proceeded into the third round effortlessly defeating both of their opponents in straight sets. American Andy Roddick and Spaniard Fernando Verdasco had to fight for their wins, but were both able to pull them out in four sets. David Ferrer defeated opponent, Xavier Malisse in three-sets once the Belgium retired in the third after losing the first two sets 6-2. The biggest upset on the men's side came when No. 12 seed Fernando Gonzalez was ousted by Ukrainian Oleksandr Dolgopolov Jr, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3. In the women's draw, the Williams sisters are ploughing through, both winning their second round matches. Venus then went on to face Dominika Cibulkova in the third round on Friday winning 6-3, 6-4. Maria Sharapova and Justine Henin both beat their second round opponents 6-3, 6-3, but will go head-to-head in the next round. Elena Dementieva went up against Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak in the third round and battled hard against the feisty Canuck to win 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-4. Defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova was handed her exit ticket on Friday by Mario Kirilenko 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. |
